What A Roof Repair Actually Fixes

Not every roofing problem means replacement. Once we're up there, here's what we're checking:

  • Active leaks. Water stains on a ceiling or wall, or moisture in the attic, usually trace to a specific failure point, not the whole roof.
  • Missing or damaged shingles. A handful of shingles lost to wind or age can typically be replaced without touching the rest of the roof.
  • Flashing failures. Loose or failed flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights is one of the most common sources of a leak that looks worse than it is.
  • Storm damage. Wind and hail can knock loose individual shingles or sections without compromising the whole roof system.

If what we find on your roof adds up to more than a repair, we'll tell you that too, and walk you through roof replacement instead of quietly repairing around a bigger problem.

How A Roof Repair Works, Step By Step

A repair isn't just "put a new shingle where the old one was." Here's what actually happens between the call and the final walkthrough:

  1. Diagnosis, not guessing. A stain on the ceiling doesn't tell you where the water actually got in, it can travel along a rafter or sheathing seam before it shows up inside. We inspect the roof surface and, if needed, the attic to trace the leak to its real source before we touch anything.
  2. Scope the damage. We check whether the failure is isolated (a handful of shingles, one flashing detail) or has spread to the decking underneath. If we find soft or rotted decking under the damaged area, that gets flagged and replaced, patching shingles over bad decking just fails again.
  3. Match materials where we can. We look for a shingle color and profile match to your existing roof. On an older or discontinued shingle line, an exact match isn't always possible, we'll tell you that upfront rather than surprise you with a visible patch.
  4. Repair, not paper over. Damaged shingles, flashing, or a section of underlayment gets removed and replaced with new material fastened to manufacturer spec, on a GAF system that means GAF-specified materials and methods.
  5. Cleanup and walkthrough. We clear debris and stray fasteners from the work area and walk the repaired area with you before we call the job done.

Repair Materials And Options: The Honest Tradeoffs

A repair has real material choices behind it, and each one has a genuine tradeoff, not just a price tag:

  • Shingle matching. We'll match your existing shingle's color and profile as closely as the manufacturer's current lineup allows. Roofs more than a few years old often carry a discontinued shade, so a patch may read slightly different up close even when it's the right product; from the ground it's rarely noticeable, but we won't pretend it's invisible.
  • Flashing metal. In Rhode Island's coastal, salt-air environment, galvanized steel flashing corrodes faster than other common metals. We'll use what holds up for your roof's actual exposure, not just the cheapest option.
  • Patch vs. section replacement. A single lost shingle or one flashing failure is a targeted patch. Wind or hail damage spread across a slope usually calls for replacing that whole section rather than patching shingle by shingle, since a patchwork of small repairs on one slope tends to fail again sooner than a clean section tear-off.

When A Repair Makes Sense, And When It Doesn't

Not every roof problem is a repair, and not every roof problem needs a full roof replacement either. What tends to point toward a repair: the roof is relatively young, the damage is limited to one area, and this is the first time you're dealing with it. What tends to point toward replacement: the roof is already near the end of its service life, the damage shows up in multiple spots at once, the decking underneath has failed, or you're on your third or fourth repair call for the same roof in a few years, at that point the cost of repeated patches starts to rival the cost of doing it once. For a longer walkthrough of the specific warning signs, see our guide on signs you need roof repair vs. a full replacement. We'll give you a straight answer after we're actually up there, not a sales pitch either direction.

The RTP Roofing Difference

We're a GAF Master Elite® certified contractor, RI-registered under GC-47694, and BBB A+ rated. We inspect your roof and we repair it. Repairs on a GAF system are made with GAF-specified materials and methods, so they don't void coverage on qualifying installations. Full warranty details are at gaf.com.

What A Roof Repair Costs

There's no honest number over the phone, since the cost of a repair depends entirely on what's actually damaged: a few shingles, a flashing detail, or a broader section of the roof. We'll give you the real number after a free, on-roof inspection, not a guess based on your description. If a maintenance plan with regular inspections would catch these problems before they become emergencies, we'll mention that too.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Inspection & Diagnosis

We get on the roof and in the attic if needed to find the actual source of the leak or damage, not just where the water is showing up inside.

  2. Step 2

    Repair Plan & Estimate

We tell you what's actually wrong and what it will take to fix it, in plain language, before any work starts.

  3. Step 3

    Repair Work

We replace or re-seal the specific shingles, flashing, or section that failed, using GAF-specified materials on GAF systems.

  4. Step 4

    Final Check

We confirm the leak or damage is resolved and walk the repair with you before we call the job done.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I need a repair or a full roof replacement?

It comes down to roof age, how much of the roof is affected, and whether the damage is isolated or widespread. A handful of shingles or one flashing failure is usually a repair. Several issues at once, or a roof already near the end of its life, usually points to replacement. We'll tell you which after we're actually up there.

Will a repair void my roof's warranty?

Not when it's done right. Repairs on a GAF system are made with GAF-specified materials and methods, which keeps qualifying installations eligible for GAF's warranty coverage. We'll confirm what applies to your specific roof.

How fast can you get to a leak?

We prioritize active leaks. Call (401) 593-1512 and we'll get you on the schedule, and if it's urgent, ask about our emergency restoration work.

Do you repair storm damage?

Yes. Wind and hail damage is one of the most common repairs we handle. If the damage may involve an insurance claim, see our storm damage and insurance claims page.

What towns do you repair roofs in?

We're based in Warwick and repair roofs throughout Rhode Island, most often in Warwick, Cranston, Providence, Coventry, and West Warwick. Call (401) 593-1512 to ask about your address.

Can you match my existing shingles exactly?

We'll match the color and profile as closely as the manufacturer's current lineup allows. On an older or discontinued shingle line, an exact match isn't always possible, and we'll tell you that upfront instead of promising something we can't deliver.
