Westerly has a long storm record, and it is worth knowing what it does and does not tell you.
The 1938 New England Hurricane caused severe destruction in the town, including the complete destruction of Napatree Point. Misquamicut was hit by devastating hurricanes in 1938, 1944 and 1954 that wiped out beach homes, hotels and other structures. Hurricane Sandy in 2012 caused $11.3 million in damages in Westerly.
