Shingle Roofing in Warwick, RI

Most quotes just say 'shingles' and leave it there. There's a real difference between the shingle system underneath one contractor's price and another's, and it's the difference between a roof that lasts and one that doesn't.

Why Most Rhode Island Homes Use Shingle Roofing

Asphalt shingle roofing is the standard on most homes we work on, for good reason:

  • Cost.

Shingle systems are one of the more affordable roofing options for the coverage and durability they offer.

  • Fast installation.

A shingle tear-off and install typically moves faster than most alternative materials, less time with your roof open.

  • Style range.

Shingles come in a range of colors and profiles, so matching your home's look isn't a compromise.

  • Straightforward repairs.

Individual shingles can be replaced without disturbing the rest of the roof, which is part of why our roof repair work is often quick and targeted.

We install GAF Timberline HDZ® architectural shingles on most residential jobs, the same system we use for full roof replacements.

Options

Shingle Options: Architectural vs. 3-Tab, and Why It Matters in RI

"Shingle roofing" isn't one product, and the difference between shingle grades matters more on the coast than it does inland:

  • Architectural (dimensional) shingles.

Multi-layer construction gives these a thicker, dimensional look and a higher wind rating than flat 3-tab shingles. This is what we install on the large majority of jobs, including GAF Timberline HDZ®, because it holds up better through Rhode Island's nor'easter season and coastal wind exposure.

  • 3-tab shingles.

A flatter, single-layer, more budget-oriented shingle with a lower wind rating than architectural. It still has a place on some jobs, but we'll tell you plainly if your roof's exposure makes it a poor fit rather than selling you the cheaper option and leaving that risk unmentioned.

  • Impact-resistant (Class 4) shingles.

A reinforced shingle option worth asking about if hail or falling debris is a concern for your property; not every insurance carrier treats these the same way, so we'd point you to your own policy rather than promise a specific discount.

  • Underlayment.

We pair shingles with GAF's synthetic underlayment as a primary water barrier, plus self-adhering ice-and-water-shield membrane at the eaves, valleys, and other vulnerable areas, an extra layer of leak protection in the areas most prone to ice damming.

We'll walk you through which combination fits your roof, your budget, and how exposed your home is, not just the option that's easiest to sell.

The System

What A Shingle Roof Installation Actually Involves

A shingle roof succeeds or fails on the layers underneath it, not just the shingles themselves:

  1. Tear-off and deck inspection.

The old roofing comes off down to the deck, and we check the decking itself for soft spots or rot before anything new goes down. Shingles only perform as well as what they're nailed to.

  2. Ice-and-water-shield and underlayment.

Self-adhering ice-and-water membrane goes down first at the eaves, valleys, and other leak-prone areas, followed by synthetic underlayment across the rest of the deck as a second water barrier.

  3. Drip edge and starter strip.

Metal drip edge along the eaves and rakes directs water off the roof instead of behind the fascia, and a starter course under the first row of shingles gives the whole system a sealed, wind-resistant foundation.

  4. Shingle courses and nailing.

Shingles go on course by course with the overlap and nailing pattern the manufacturer specifies, this is what the wind rating actually depends on, not just the shingle itself.

  5. Flashing at every penetration.

Chimneys, vents, skylights, and roof-to-wall transitions each get their own flashing detail. Flashing that's overlapped wrong or under-sealed is one of the most common places any shingle roof leaks.

  6. Ridge cap and ventilation.

Ridge cap shingles close out the roof's peak, and proper ridge, intake, and soffit ventilation keeps air moving through the attic, which helps prevent the ice dams and heat buildup that shorten a shingle roof's life.

We cover this same ground in the process steps below, and we'll walk the finished roof with you so you can see the flashing and ridge detail for yourself before we call it done.

Shingle Roof Repair vs. Replacement

Not every shingle problem means a full replacement. A handful of missing or damaged shingles, a flashing detail that's opened up around a chimney or vent, or an isolated leak is usually a repair, and individual shingles can be swapped out without disturbing the rest of the roof. What usually points toward replacement is granule loss and curling spread across large sections of the roof, a roof nearing or past its expected service life, or multiple separate leak points rather than one. We'll check the shingles, the flashing, and the deck during an inspection and tell you honestly which side of that line your roof is on, we don't have a reason to sell you a bigger job than the roof needs. See our roof inspection page for how we walk through that check, or our roofing repair page if you already know it's a targeted fix. Still deciding between materials in the first place? Our guide on asphalt shingle vs. metal roofing for New England homes lays out the tradeoffs.

Cost

What A Shingle Roof Costs

Cost depends on your roof's square footage and pitch, how many layers of old roofing need to come off, the specific shingle line and grade you choose (architectural vs. 3-tab vs. impact-resistant), and how much flashing and ventilation work the roof needs.

We'll give you the real number after a free, on-roof inspection, not a guess from a satellite photo.

Signs Your Shingle Roof Is Wearing Out

Between the big, obvious problems, missing shingles, active leaks, there are earlier signs worth watching for: shingle edges starting to curl or lift, granules collecting in the gutters after a rain, and dark streaking across the surface, which is usually algae rather than structural damage. None of these mean an immediate replacement, but they're worth a free inspection so we can tell you where your roof actually stands before something smaller becomes a bigger repair.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Inspection & Material Selection

We check your current roof and deck condition and help you choose the right shingle grade and GAF line for your home, budget, and Rhode Island's weather.

  2. Step 2

    Tear-Off

Your landscaping gets protected and the old roof comes off down to the deck, so nothing gets installed over a hidden problem.

  3. Step 3

    Underlayment & Shingle Installation

We install self-adhering ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys, GAF synthetic underlayment across the deck, then lay shingles with proper overlap and nailing, flashing every chimney, vent, and skylight along the way.

  4. Step 4

    Ridge Cap & Ventilation

We close out the roof with ridge cap shingles and confirm ridge, intake, and soffit ventilation are working together to keep the attic properly vented.

  5. Step 5

    Final Inspection & Cleanup

We run a magnetic sweep for stray nails, walk the finished roof with you, and register your warranty paperwork before we call the job done.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What shingle brand does RTP Roofing install?

GAF Timberline HDZ® architectural shingles on most residential jobs, paired with GAF's own synthetic underlayment. As a GAF Master Elite® contractor, this is the system we can back with GAF's strongest available warranty.

How long does a shingle roof last?

Most asphalt shingle roofs last 20-30 years depending on the material, installation quality, and exposure. We'll give you a more specific read after inspecting your roof.

Can you match my current shingle color and style?

In most cases, yes, or we'll help you choose a close match or a style you prefer. We'll show you real options during your estimate, not just a swatch card.

Do you offer a warranty on shingle roofing?

As a GAF Master Elite® contractor, we can offer GAF's Golden Pledge® Limited Warranty on qualifying installations, up to 50 years of non-prorated coverage. Coverage and eligibility vary by product and installation.

Is shingle roofing better than metal for my home?

It depends on your budget, roof pitch, and how long you plan to be in the home. See our metal roofing page for a comparison, or call (401) 593-1512 and we'll walk through it with you.

Architectural or 3-tab shingles, which should I choose?

Architectural shingles cost more but carry a higher wind rating and a more dimensional look, which is why we install them on the large majority of jobs given Rhode Island's coastal wind exposure. 3-tab still has a place on some budgets and roofs, and we'll tell you honestly if your home's exposure makes it a poor fit.

How do I know if my shingle roof needs a repair or a full replacement?

A handful of missing or damaged shingles, an isolated leak, or an opened-up flashing detail is usually a repair. Granule loss and curling spread across large sections, a roof near the end of its service life, or leaks in multiple separate spots usually points to replacement. We'll check the shingles, flashing, and deck and give you a straight answer.
