Local Conditions

What Roofs Here Are Really Like

Looking for roofing contractors in Coventry, RI? Coventry is spread out, from Washington to Greene and the other villages, and a roofer working here crosses a lot of ground. RTP Roofing gets on the roof before we quote, so the price reflects what is actually up there.

Detached single-family homes make up 76.6 percent of Coventry's housing units, about 11,821 of them, compared with 67.1 percent for the county and 55.7 percent for the state, per the town's draft housing findings memo. The same memo gives a median year built of 1969 and says nearly 60 percent of units were built before 1978. The town memo puts the median single-family sale price at $438,950 in 2025.

What does that mean for your roof? Mostly one thing: a lot of Coventry roofs are single-family roofs on their own lot, with their own trees, their own exposure and their own history. A build year does not tell you what condition a roof is in today, because a roof can be replaced long after a house goes up. Only an on-roof inspection does.

Villages

The Villages We Work In

Coventry has many 19th-century villages, including Anthony, Arkwright, Harris, Washington, Quidnick, Greene and Summit. The town's ZIP code is 02816.

We take roofing calls across all of it. Not sure whether your address is in one of those villages or just near one? Call (401) 593-1512 and we will sort it out before we quote.

Coventry also has 2 historic areas on the National Register of Historic Places:

  • Rice City Historic District: a 19th-century village along Plainfield Pike between Sisson Road and Gibson Hill Road in northwestern Coventry, listed June 9, 1980, with a boundary increase on May 26, 2000. Greek Revival and Federal style housing predominates.
  • Hopkins Hollow Village: along Hopkins Hollow, Narrow Lane and Perry Hill Road, listed January 27, 2010.

Permits

How To Start a Roof Permit in Coventry: 4 Steps

The Town of Coventry's Building Official page says the town now offers online permitting and no longer accepts paper permits. The page does not spell out what a re-roof needs, so confirm your scope with the office before work starts. Here is the path in 4 steps.

  1. Confirm Your Scope.

Ask the Building Official whether your job needs a permit. Call (401) 822-9156 or email buildingofficial@coventryri.gov.

  2. Find the Forms.

Building and zoning forms are listed under "Licenses, Forms, Permits and Regulations" on the town website.

  3. File Online.

Applications go through the town's portal at coventryri.viewpointcloud.com.

  4. Use the Kiosk if You Need Help.

The Building Official's office is at 1675 Flat River Road, and the town says there is a kiosk at the building inspector's office for assistance.

Ask the office about fees and turnaround times. The town page does not list them.

Historic Areas And Roof Rules

Being listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as Rice City and Hopkins Hollow are, is a recognition of the area. If your house is in or near one of them, call the Building Official before you choose a material. We check with the office before we quote.

The town's zoning for the Village Rural Commercial district does set a roof rule. Under Chapter 255, on eCode360, new buildings there call for traditional roof forms, gabled, lipped and pitched, with flat roofs avoided. That applies to new buildings in that district, not to a re-roof on an existing house.

The Record

Storms, Trees And Flooding In Coventry

If a tree leans over your house, a limb that lands on the roof or drags on a line is the kind of damage to check for after a storm. Look at the roofline from the ground, then call for an inspection rather than going up yourself. Our storm and insurance claims guide covers what to document.

Flooding is a separate matter. High water is a different problem from a leaking roof, and we would not tell you one caused the other without looking.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Coventry?

Ask the Building Official at (401) 822-9156 before work starts, because the town's page does not spell out a re-roof rule. What the page does say is that permits are now filed online through the town's ViewPoint Cloud portal and paper permits are no longer accepted.

Where is the Coventry Building Official's office?

At 1675 Flat River Road. The town page lists (401) 822-9156 and buildingofficial@coventryri.gov, and says there is a kiosk at the building inspector's office for help with online permitting. Office hours are not stated on the page, so call first.

Which parts of Coventry do you serve?

All of it. Coventry has many 19th-century villages, including Anthony, Arkwright, Harris, Washington, Quidnick, Greene and Summit. Call (401) 593-1512 with your address and we will confirm.

My house was built around 1969. Does that mean my roof is old?

No. The town's draft housing memo gives 1969 as the median year built in Coventry, but a build year says nothing about when a roof was last replaced or what shape it is in. Only an on-roof inspection tells you that.

Does my house in Rice City or Hopkins Hollow need special roof approval?

Both areas are on the National Register of Historic Places, Rice City (listed in 1980) and Hopkins Hollow Village (listed in 2010). Call the Building Official at (401) 822-9156 before you choose a material, and tell us your address so we can note it at inspection.

A tree limb hit my roof. What should I do first?

Stay off the roof and photograph what you can see from the ground. Call (401) 593-1512 for an inspection, and see our storm and insurance claims guide for what to document.

Can you look at my roof and gutters in the same visit?

Yes. We offer gutter work and tree services alongside roofing, so if a limb or clogged gutter is part of the problem we can look at it all in one visit and quote what applies.

Do you offer a warranty on roofs in Coventry?

As a GAF Master Elite® contractor, we can offer GAF's Golden Pledge® Limited Warranty on qualifying installations, up to 50 years of non-prorated coverage. Coverage and eligibility vary by product and installation.
